Restoration of the Buildings

The 1912 Superintendent’s Office: To make the building more useful and efficient for visitors, it was decided to restore to the 1930s floor plan, leaving the bathroom and kitchen intact. Walls that had been removed in the 1970s and 1980s were reinstalled, trimmed to match the original woodwork still intact in other parts of the building. Other projects included new wiring and plumbing, painting interior walls and woodwork in the original colors, and the re- installation of two iron mantles. The original windows, all still in place, have been restored and are operable.

The 1913 Superintendent’s Residence: Restoration of the interior wood trim and flooring is the first phase of work currently in progress. Upgrading the electrical and HVAC systems will also be part of this project. A major portion of the house will be open to the public in the fall of 2010 with furniture and artifacts from the period when the building was first occupied. Eventually the exterior wooden elements will be painted when funds are available.
